Travel Awards

With the continual support from corporate and individual sponsors, as well as the Dr. David A. Atkinson Memorial Endowment and Student Scholarship Fund, the International Society for Ion Mobility Spectrometry is pleased to offer travel awards to subsidize travel costs in attending the International Conference on Ion Mobility Spectrometry. The goal of these travel awards is to enable students and early career researchers to attend the International Conference on Ion Mobility Spectrometry by offsetting travel costs. This is a student-led initiative with a policy drafted by students for students.

Application for the ISIMS 2023 travel award is now closed

If you would like to support the existing travel awards or to create a special sponsor award for students and early career researchers in collaboration with the ISIMS, please contact the conference organizers to discuss.

Payment and Amount

For the ISIMS 2023, the selected applicants living outside of Europe will receive grants of US$500 each, while the selected applicants living in Europe will receive grants of US$250 each, applicable as a discount towards the ISIMS 2023 conference registration and/or short course fee. The award is not redeemable as money. Travel awards are not transferrable.

Important Dates

  • Travel awards application deadline: 5 pm Central European Summer Time, April 28, 2023

  • Travel awards notification: by May 5, 2023

  • Travel award recipients’ registration deadline: 5 pm Central European Summer Time, July 7, 2023

  • Hotel rooms will be held for the conference until July 1, 2023. Subject to hotel availability.

  • At the time of the conference, applicants must be either a full-time student (enrolled in a Bachelor, Master, PhD, or equivalent program) or an early career researcher. For this award’s purpose, early career researchers are typically candidates within the first three years of their academic postdoc, minus any delays such as parental, family-related, medical and bereavement leave, or delays related to COVID-19. However, everyone in a comparable non-academic position is welcome to apply.

  • Applicants must be the presenting author of an abstract for an oral or poster presentation submitted with the travel award application. Attendance and presentation by the travel award recipient at the International Conference on Ion Mobility Spectrometry are required for the year that the travel award is granted.

  • Past travel award recipients may apply again. However, priority will be given to first time applicants meeting all requirements.

  • Only one applicant per organization may apply for the ISIMS 2023 travel award. If multiple applications from a single organization are received, we will ask the applicants from the organization to withdraw all but one application. Otherwise, multiple applications are considered not eligible. Separate research groups from the same institution are treated as different organizations.

Online Application

  • Please submit your application via the online application form. If you are not able to access the online application form, please contact organizers.

  • Please have your abstract of either an oral or a poster presentation ready when filling the online application. Please do not reference the name of your professor/principal investigator, research group, academic institution, and/or affiliation in the abstract body, as this would prevent the abstract from entering the blind review process.

  • Submitted abstracts receiving a travel award will be automatically added to the technical program. Authors of submitted abstracts not receiving a travel award will be contacted by the Technical Program Chair. You do not need to resubmit the abstract. Please submit abstract(s) for any additional presentation(s) by the regular submission deadline [to insert link to abstract web page].

Travel Award Application Review

  • All eligible applications will be evaluated based on the scientific merit of the submitted abstract.

  • ISIMS board members and/or ISIMS members, who are not affiliated with any applicants for the ISIMS Travel Award in the current year, will be selected to review the Travel Award applications. It will be a blind review – the applicant’s name and affiliated organization will be withheld from the reviewers.
